BLOG POST #255: Research on a true-crime involving a man who tampered with a consumer product.

Customers alerted the manufacturer of Styrofoam cups that they’d found glass shards in their product. The manufacture stopped production and launched an aggressive investigation.

Through video, the manufacturer determined one employee had been deliberate to place over 100 shards of glass in the Styrofoam cup sleeves. Three restaurants in three states had received the contaminated cups. The manufacturer notified the authorities and fired the employee.

A County Sheriff Captain arrested the ex-employee at his home. Investigators found additional glass shards in his work area and at his home.

The U.S. Attorney assigned to the case, alleged the employee had become disgruntled when his employer switched his shift from 8 hours to 12 hours.”

The employee filed a grievance regarding his shift change. He applied for and received a position with the preferred 8 hours, but paid less.

Two years after his arrest and days before his trial date, he pleaded guilty to consumer product tampering.

A U.S. District Judge sentenced the 44-year-old ex-employee to 60 months in federal prison.
