Robin Lyons' Blog Post #120Why aren’t school teachers drug tested? I don’t know of any school districts requiring teachers to pass a drug test, before or during their employment. If you know of one, please email me with the district name and location.

Schools typically require safety-sensitive positions, such as a bus driver, to pass a pre-employment drug test. And more often than not bus drivers are also required to undergo periodic and random drug and alcohol testing.

BLOG POST #112: This week, I’m sharing research on a specific criminal case involving a 27-year-old second-grade school teacher with a drug problem.

A Classic Case

Too often a person prescribed pain medication for an injury of some sort becomes a drug addict. Their physician stops treatment, but the addiction remains. And then they turn to illegal drugs to self-medicate.

Fleecing of America

Robin Lyons BlogHello! You may or may not know I worked as a payroll accountant for a school district before I retired. I’m telling you this because one of the two people in this blog post was an accountant, whose business provided budgeting and bookkeeping services for the school district.

I semi-seriously used to say to a co-worker, the way the district spent the public’s money was a fleecing of America.

At my level, I saw areas where thievery was possible. Apparently, the two women in this post found weak places as well. And they took advantage of those weaknesses.

Thanks for taking the time to read my research and for becoming more aware of possible wrongdoing in schools.

BLOG POST #100: This week, I’m sharing research on two specific criminal cases involving an accountant and a school teacher—a mother and her daughter.

Mother was a contract accountant. Typically, contract accountants are responsible for everything from requests for proposals to payment. Not typical is an accountant who processes her check requests.

BLOG POST #90: This week, I’m sharing research on a specific criminal case involving the Headmaster of a Christian School.

First red flag: One year before he joined the church, the headmaster was convicted of federal tax violations.

BLOG POST #27: This week, I’m sharing research on a specific criminal case involving an Associate School Superintendent.

This crime occurred at School District, a world class school district, where the core values include Safe and Orderly Schools. Although embezzlement isn’t a direct safety threat to school children, indirectly everyone pays the price when someone embezzles.

He was the Associate School Superintendent and acting CFO when he directed a subordinate to issue a $236,000 check to his Leadership Academy. He provided the district with a fraudulent invoice to validate the expenditure. Later, he transferred the money to his personal account from which he financed travel and purchased a Jaguar.

BLOG POST #20: She was the school bookkeeper at the Junior/Senior High School, grades seven through twelve. A trusted employee who had access to the school safe and had general accounting and bookkeeping responsibilities.

A year or so after she was hired she began issuing checks to herself from the Student Activities account, money raised by students and parents for class activities and special events. She also fabricated supporting documentation so payments appeared legitimate.
