It appears no line of employment is without workers who steal from their employer. In this case, the employer was the United States Army.
The Federal Government indicted an officer and his wife, both serving in the Army. They charged them with stealing from the military for personal gain.
The husband had access to order military equipment and supplies for units. The indictment claimed the husband used his position to request items, then turned around and sold the goods to private individuals for personal profit.
Some goods they acquired and sold were gun parts, firearms, magazines, scopes, night-vision goggles, bayonets, swords, electronic equipment, tools, gym equipment, and guitars—totaling over $2 million.
Evidence showed how they deposited money from their sales into a newly opened account, moved the money to investment accounts, closing accounts here and opening new accounts elsewhere.
The government accused the 36-year-old wife of aiding her husband in that her name was on bank accounts used for the fraud.
The criminal activity became known when a buyer of a substantial number of scopes spoke with the manufacturer about warranties on the gear that the manufacturer knew had gone to the U.S. Army.
An FBI Special Agent associated with the case said about the crime,
“Everyday service men and women make sacrifices for our country. It’s appalling {defendant} stole property his fellow soldiers needed to stay safe to line his own pockets.”
Both husband and wife went to trial, and both were convicted. The couple appealed and were granted a second trial. The jury in the second trial acquitted the wife.
The 38-year-old husband pled guilty to theft of government property, wire fraud, money laundering, mail fraud, and transportation of stolen goods. A judge sentenced him to three years in prison and to pay restitution of $250,000 and forfeit $250,000.
