A Birthday Party Like No Other

Do you remember your first birthday? Yeah, I don’t either. Hopefully, the one-year-old child in this true crime won’t remember their first birthday. The child’s mother hosted a party at a local mall. There were inflatable toys to jump, climb, slide and have fun on along with a party room where food, drinks, cake and gifts were the focus.

A security recording showed an argument erupt between the child’s mother and her ex-boyfriend’s mother. The ex-boyfriend and father of the child celebrating their birthday had brought his mother and girlfriend to the party. The child’s mother brought a male friend to the party to help set-up.

To make matters worse, while the father’s new girlfriend tried to separate the women who were arguing, the father pulled out a handgun and fire a few of shots at the male friend who was there to help.

Before officers could respond to the altercation and call about shots being fired at the mall, the child’s father ran away from the scene. The man kept running for 28 days until the authorities apprehended him.

The 35-year-old man went to trial where a jury found him guilty of several crimes.

  • Attempted Second Degree Murder

  • Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Crime of Violence

  • Illegal Possession of a Regulated Firearm After Being Convicted of a Disqualifying Crime

  • Loaded Handgun on Person

  • Five (5) counts of Reckless Endangerment

A judge sentenced him to 93-years in prison, suspending 28 of the years leaving 65 to be served. The first twenty years are without the possibility of parole and because the crime was violent, he cannot go before a parole board until he has served half of his sentence.

After the conviction, a state attorney associated with the case said,

“It is despicable that anyone would resort to gun violence to resolve their issues.”

The friend of the child’s mother survived two gunshots in his leg and one in his hand.
